A
halter is a type of shirt in which the fabric wraps behind and around
the neck leaving the shoulders, hands and back bare. This term has been
derived from the German word for holder. It is usually short in size and
is held in place by a narrow band of cloth around the back of the neck.
Halter is basically a design and so it can either be a whole dress or
just a shirt. Halters used for swimwear are in the form of a top under which either a short skirt or pants can be worn. Halters are much in vogue in the present times as they are trendy and give women an elegant look, they can be used as beachwear, or even for informal occasions like parties.
History:
The halter tops came into being in the 1930's but then they were exclusively worn by women who worked in theatre or movies. Their popularity as beachwear started in 1940's when they became a bit more revealing. With the bikini gaining immense popularity in 1950's, halters went out of fashion for around a decade but they again came back in early 1970's and since then they are a very popular option for stylish and fashionable women. Halters are designed in various ways, they may either be tied around the neck, clasped or be in the form of an uninterrupted piece of fabric that slides over the head. Halters are used in many ways and thus different fabrics are used keeping in mind the type of halter being made:-
Silk: Usually silk is used for the evening dress type halter, which gives it a more elegant look suited for informal gatherings or parties.
Satin: This fabric also has a glazed finish and thus used for making halter dresses.
Lycra or Spandex: This fabric is lightweight and elastic and so widely used for halter swim dress.
Cotton: This is used for all types of halters, as it is a very comfortable fabric.
