Kaftans are long gowns or robes sewn in a narrow v-neck fashion usually
decorated with buttons, a toggle or a tie with elbow length sleeves and
a flowing border because of which they are suited to many body shapes.
Also called muumuus or house, these are liked by women who are not very
thin. Kaftans are comfortable and stylish summer wear. Moreover, they can be either used as a sophisticated top for evening or daytime or as beachwear over a swimming costume. In recent years this stylish garment has become a necessary part of the beachwear attire, fashionable and easy to wear.
Usually, adorned with beautiful embroidery work and stunning designs, they look smart enough to be worn for informal gathering or party.
History:
Kaftans were introduced by men in Turkey and other Near East Countries. The word "kaftans" is derived from the Turkish word "q-aftan". It is sometimes spelled as caftan in Persian language is a man's cotton or silk cloak having buttons in front, with full sleeves, reaching to the ankles and worn usually with a scarf.
The kaftans worn by the Sultans of Ottoman Empire constitute one of the most splendid collections of Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. Their importance can be judged by the fact that they were given as gifts to important dignitaries and victorious generals during religious festivals. Kaftans were often embroidered on the front and on the sleeves.
In the 14th century large patterns and dull colors were used, these became smaller and brighter in the next century. By the second half of the 17th century the most exorbitant fabrics were used with embroideries and small patterns.
Generally the fabrics used for making these garments were manufactured in Istanbul and Bursa, but some came from as far as Venice, Genoa, Persia, India and even China.
Nowadays kaftans are usually worn by women, and have evolved into stylish beachwear available in many colors, designs, patterns and fabrics. Appropriate for both formal and semi-formal occasions, Ladies Kaftans are available in all sizes and are mostly hand-embroidered.
